Neither: By reducing the rate of serotonin removal (norepinephrin in SNRIs) SSRIs alter the relative balance of those neurotransmitters w/ glutamate (G) but that's an indirect increase. Since high (G) seems associated w/ depression - they might unintentionally make things worse for some folk (paradox side effect). An experimental new drug (riluzole) to > G is being studied now. Who knows?
