Are there any short term or long term effects of mononucleosis? what are they?

Various effects: In short term, mononucleosis can make you acutely sick with sore throat, mild fevers and a rash as well as abdominal pain, which can be from an enlarged liver or spleen and needs to be checked to avoid complications like rupture. Long term complications of mono include chronic fatigue, myalgias and glandular enlargements. Most cases of mono recover spontaneously, however, with supportive care.

Both: Mononucleosis from Epstein-Barr virus: Short-term: enlarged spleen (careful w/ sports to avoid rupture), rash (especially if given Amoxicillin), rarely neurologic symptoms or other. Long-term: lymphoma (rare). Almost everyone tests positive for Epstein-Barr virus exposure (90-95% worldwide), so please do not spend any energy worrying about getting lymphoma from having had mononucleosis.
