Probably ok: If spitting up is not causing signs of pain such as being irritable or the amount of spitting affecting proper weight gain then it is usually advised not to treat by altering thickness of feeds or medication. The the recent spit smelling like vomit may have been truly vomit and not usual spit or due to delay of spit had such odor.

Baby's weight?: If the baby is well grown and happy, not having pain with his spitups then I would tend to agree with your pediatrician! I don't mind the smell, if it has made it to the stomach it will naturally have that acidic smell.
