Lipomas can push on: surrounding tissue, and if there is a nerve nearby that can lead to discomfort. Lipomas themselves are benign and tend to cause pain when they are in an odd location, when pressure is put on them, or if they grow so large they push on nearby muscle, etc. Removing them is usually a straightforward outpatient procedure done under local.
