Anterior fontanelle: and posterior fontanelle in babies provides a space for brain growth and skull expansion. The anterior usually closes between 1 year and 15 months, the posterior by about 4 months. Premature closure is associated with restricted brain growth and the developmental disorders that result from it.

Define too fast: The soft spot can start out as small as an eraser or as big as a grapefruit.Whether or not you can still feel it is of little concern as long as the skull is growing normally. The skull plates push away from each other as they grow, allowing the skull to expand the room for a growing brain. If the meeting point of the skull plates ridge up like a steeple, see your doc.
