Fontanelles: Anterior and posterior Fontanelles, along with skull sutures, are present to accommodate the rapidly expanding brain volume in very young children. Premature closure of these structures results in microcephaly and is cause for concern. Your pediatrician checks these structures at every well visit until 2-3 years of age.
