What causes thyroid disorders?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Three main causes: Hi. The three main causes of thyroid disorders are: 1) autoimmunity, 2) neoplasia, and 3) trivially, thyroid surgery (usually done because of #2). Autoimmunity can cause hypo- or hyperthyroidism. Neoplasia can be benign, malignant, or can cause hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroid nodules are always benign; reportable otherwise). Surgery to remove the thyroid (usually for cancer) is trivial.
