Dr. Johanna Fricke answered

Specializes in Pediatrics - Developmental and Behavioral

2 neuroleptics are: FDA-approved for irritability in kids age 6-17 with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Abilify (aripiprazole) & Risperdal. They also help with the anxiety that often drives aggressive & "oppositional" behaviors. We discuss drug interactions & side effects before prescribing. Though doses are far lower than for Bipolar Disorder, we monitor liver functions, lipids, prolactin level, glucose, insulin levels & weight.
