They can be at times: Risperdal which is an antipsychotic is one of the only drugs currently with fda approval for use in patients with autism, including children. It is used for aggressive behavior, whether it be towards others or self injurious as well as for mood swings. It can be effective but is not without side effects such as weight gain and uncontrollable muscle movements. Others are used but are off label.

Both Risperdal & : Abilify (aripiprazole) are approved for children & teens with irritability, "melt-downs, " or aggression associated with autism. Dosing is usually effective at much lower doses than are used for neurotypical children with primary mental illness, e.g. Risperdal .25 mg 1-3 x /day or Abilify (aripiprazole) 1-5 mg./day. Rarely have i had to use > 1.25 mg total daily dose of Risperdal or > 10 mg. Of abilify (aripiprazole).
