Melatonin: I do not use sleeping pills in my practice. I recommend use of Melatonin to help train the brain. You take it at the same time every night to enhance the natural release of melatonin in the body to promote the start of a sleep cycle. The underlying cause of insomnia should be evaluated and proper sleep hygiene followed.

Prevention: Not being able to sleep may indicated sleep problems that can be life shortening or life threatening. The only way to know if there are serious problems is with an overnight sleep test. I encourage you to seek help.
