It depends: Mild elevations are trivial; reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. Iron deficiency raises platelets as high as maybe 600,000; nobody knows why. If higher, it may be essential thrombocythemia (a mild chronic blood disease due to an acquired mutation) or another illness in its family.
