Correlation: The presence of IBD is associated to some degree with colon cancer. The longer the duration of disease, greater than 20 yrs ,and the degree of bowel involvement has a correlation with the appearance of a malignancy. The presence of inflammation induces release of cytokines over bowel mucosa that in the presence of factors such as carcinogens in food and viruses induce malignant transformation.

Increased risk: Chronic ulcerative colitis does increase ones risk for colon cancer. It is very important to have regular screening colonoscopies to ensure no dysplasia or polyps. If these are found, surgical removal of the colon with Jpouch is the treatment of choice.
