PFT's: The best way is a pulmonary function test--spiromety plus lung volumes and diffusion capacity.

PFTs and ABG...: The diagnosis of COPD is made via the physician's evaluation in conjunction with pulmonary function testing which demonstrates the presence and severity of the chronic obstruction. Abgs can determine if there is adequate ventilation and oxygenation. Pulse ox can determine the oxygen level non-invasively.
