What are the characteristics of a high-quality nicu?

Dr. Sue Hall answered

Special care 4 babes: Nicus can be large or small and have private rooms or one large room. But they all have staff specially trained in the care of sick or premature infants. Most often, the doctors will be pediatricians with extra training in newborn intensive care (neonatologists). Your baby may go to nicu if s/he is low birthweight, premature, or has any trouble after birth.

Neonatologists: A high-quality nicu will have neonatologists, pediatricians with 3 extra years of training in problems of newborns, caring for babies. Staff in larger nicus will have more experience with a broad range of problems, and will have more consulting doctors available in different pediatric sub-specialties. A high-quality nicu will offer parents emotional support and really care about the babies.
