Yes: As long as a baby is in stable condition, and the nicu doctors and nurses are finished working with the baby, then the parents can go in to visit and hold the baby. Parents should always check with the nurses first, to be sure the baby is stable enough to be held.

Yes: You should absolutely be able to hold your baby in the nicu! if your baby is really sick, it might be a few days. Ask the baby's nurse and doctor to tell you when the baby is stable enough to be held, especially for kangaroo care (skin-to-skin contact). Until the baby can be held, you can hold the baby's hand, talk softly to him, and perhaps take his temperature and change his diapers.
