A member asked:

Are you under anesthesia for an upper endoscopy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Varies by practice: General anesthesia is usually defined as being unresponsive to noxious stimuli. Sedation anesthesia would be where you can tolerate otherwise unpleasant procedures (such as having a hosepipe put down your throat!). There is a fine line between heaving sedation and anesthesia. Sedation/anesthesia varies from practice to practice - some lightly sedate, others use general anesthesia for endoscopy.
