Microcephaly = small: head, or a head circumference for age & gender < 5th %ile. Head growth reflects brain growth. Any genetic or other medical condition that disrupts fetal brain development can cause congenital microcephaly. Any genetic or other medical condition that damages an infant or child's brain or causes degeneration & slows its velocity of growth can cause acquired microcephaly. See below.
