More annoyance: HSV-1 is what is the cause of cold sores on the lips. It is not a cause of serious illness. In oral sex it can be given to a partner in the genital area, but it is usually not recurrent in that location and not severe like HSV-2. Decreasing stress and staying healthy are the best ways to avoid recurrences.

Cold sore.: HSV-1 generally causes cold sores about the lips, and HSV-2 causes genital herpes. Cold sores may come and go over your lifetime but would not be a real medical concern.
