Ice, rest, see doc: I think the same general principles apply here as in any type of trauma. Since, you are not apparently disabled at this point in any significant way I don't see the absolute need to go to an emergency room unless you'd like to take advantage of having met your deductible for the year with your insurance and try and get as much medical service as possible? Ice to the back, rest, and call your doc.

Situational: If pain is improving, and you are not being immobilized, likely this represents soft tissue bruising, but if pain seems intense, and certain activities cause distinct worsening, might be worthwhile to X-ray. Contact your doctor if pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness appears.
