Tricky question...: Light to moderate drinkers are fine. Heavy drinkers suffer from many problems, because ethanol, like pretty much every substance, can be toxic. Folks do develop alcoholic (dilated) cardiomyopathy. If a patient is drinking enough to cause cirrhosis (connective tissue scarring on the liver) it's probably going to damage the valves too. Follow your cardiothoracic surgeon's advice & you'll be OK.
