Instability: While it's impossible to be certain without examining your boyfriend, realize that a knee "giving out" is a sign of instability. This is often related to ligamentous damage. Your boyfriend would be best suited by seeking a formal evaluation by an orthopedic surgery, as this injury may not get better on it's own.
