As a rule: it is best to decrease the total dose about 10% per week and slowly wean the medication to prevent withdrawal or have your physician change your Xanax (alprazolam) to a long acting med like Tranxene which may be easier to wean off. Either way it takes a while to do safely.

Very slow taper: Xanax (alprazolam) is a difficult medication to get off of and the higher the dose and the longer the time used will determine to a large degree what is a safe taper. You should not be reducing daily. You should not try to come off of this medication without being under the supervision of a physician who is knowledgeable in taking patients off this kind of medication. Withdrawal can be severe.
