Hormones plus: There may be other issues too that concern you but not to the point of depression until the monthly hormone fluctuations throw you into a full depression. See your doctor or GYN for lab work and exam. I hope you don't simply get a Rx for the usual SSRI since a month of side effects for a week of symptoms seems like a bad deal. Discuss hormonal ideas too. Diet and activity for that week may help.

PremenstrualSyndrome: Depression that comes on approximately 4 days before menstruation and goes away 2-3 days after onset of menstruation is part of the premenstrual syndrome and is hormone related. The most effective treatments are SSRI type anti-depressants, and are usually prescribed to be taken throughout the month. They can often be effective starting day 14 of cycle and stopping with menstruation.
