Not necessarily: Your full echo report will help your cardiologist gauge your risks. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP,a "buckling" of this heart valve when closed)is common, &most do very well.It can occur with mitral regurgitation (MR, leakage) however which can worsen over time and need valve replacement surgery. One study suggested that 9 out of 10 with MVP will NOT need surgery - chances depend on various factors.
