Genetic disorders: A baby conceived by a couple that are closely related has a higher risk of a genetic disorder. Many genetic disorders are recessive and only cause problems if both parents carry the same abnormal gene. If you are related, there is a higher chance that both of you will carry the same abnormal gene and this increases the baby's risk for that disorder. These disorders can be serious.

Consanguinity: If the mother and father are closely related, for example siblings, there is a greater chance of genetic disease being found in their offspring. Some estimates are a 31% higher risk for death or serious defect when siblings mate. The risk is considerably less when cousins mate - approximately 1.7-4.4%. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
