What do they do during trimalleolar ankle fracture surgery?

Internal fixation: A trimalleolar fracture involves the medial and lateral malleoli and the third is the posterior aspect of the tibia. Usually the fractures are reduced and stabilized with screws and maybe a plate along the fibula followed with a cast and crutches.

ORIF: Open reduction internal fixation which means making incisions, putting the bones back in the proper position and holding the bones in the proper position with metal plates and screws.

Stabilize: The broken bones are put back into anatomical alignment. The bones are held in place with metal plates and screws.
