If saline gargles: aren't helping, see your doctor to have her/him examine your throat, and make sure it's not inflamed. Not sure what type of cigarettes you were smoking, but it's obviously irritated your mucous membrane of your throat lining, and even if inhaled, it can irritate your throat. So refrain from smoking anymore until you have it examined by your doctor, to make sure it's not affecting your breathing.

Smoking hurts!: Smoking can irritate your throat and chest. It can last between 24 and 72 hours. Drink water. If you develop a fever or chills, or the irritation persists, be sure to see a physician for evaluation.
