Controversial: Peds. disagree on this issue. First ,rickets is not common in the USA. Your baby's formula is already vitamin D fortified. Pediatricians pretty much agree that breast fed infants need vit. D supplementation. They disagree if formula fed babies need extra vitamin D. Some docs think if babies get less than 32 oz/day, they do. Sounds like your doc is in the other school. Ok to wait 1 month.

New recommendation: The American Academy of Pediatrics states that "Exclusively and partially breastfed babies should receive 400 IU (units) of vitamin D each day starting in the first few days of life and continuing up until babies are weaned to at least 1 liter or 1 quart of vitamin D fortified formula or milk a day." Read the labeling carefully, some brands have 400 units per drop, vs per dropper-full.
