Try stretching, etc.: If your job requires sitting all day, it might help to stretch, and move your body in the opposite way that you move it when sitting down to work. This would not only be likely to help the buttocks, but also your lower back, a true example of a place where chronic pain occurs. Lying on your stomach, and/or some swimming may also help.

Many causes: It can come from a lumbar sprain to a herniated disc. An evaluation by a spine specialist would be appropriate.

Several poss. causes: Skipping the jokes: buttock pain can result from muscle strain, tendon injury, lumbar or sciatic nerve injury or impingement (ex. Disc herniation), over-tightened muscles (ex. Pyriformis syndrome), sacroiliac injury, sacrotuberous ligament injury, and many more. A good physical, including an osteopathic hands-on exam, can help determine the cause; manipulation is often the treatment of choice.
