Your MD knows best: Your physician should know you the best regarding your medical condition and ability to proceed with an exercise program. You may consider working out with a partner or friend, or even a professional trainer if possible. This would diminish any startup anxiety on your part and may make exercising more fun, safe, and enjoyable.
