Red and painful?: you may be referring to a condition known as Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis, is a benign, painful condition of the helix, of the ear. Supportive treatment with a possible modified pillow to reduce pressure on the ear should help with a tincture of time and possible nonsteroidal's. However further evaluation by dermatology is probably a good idea.
