Back pain: Stretching exercises to improve core strength (back and stomach muscles) and losing weight can help reduce the pain. Apply ice to the low back at night and warm moist heat in the morning. Avoid tobacco products to slow the arthritis in the low back. Obtain a second opinion from a spine specialist.

Walk 15-30 min/day: Walking can strengthen back muscles, decrease back pain, increase strength and endurance and help a person lose weight. It is safe for almost everyone, even with back problems. A person who doesn't do much walking may want to start with just 15 minutes at a slow pace and work up to longer and faster walks. It would be great for you to walk with her as a motivator.
