Surgery first: All patients with localized cancer in te kidneys are treated with surgical removal of the kidney (part or whole). Even patients with advanced cancer which has spread typically undergo kidney removal first followed by chemotherpay with one of several newly approved chemotherapy drugs.

Surgical usually: Most kidney cancers are treatable with surgery. Some are also treated with freezing or heat destruction. Newer medications have been used in advanced kidney cancer that has spread outside the kidney.

Systemic therapy: For kidney cancer that has spread, it is primarily treated with systemic therapy. Currently in the USA, the systemic medications use for kidney cancer can be broadly grouped into 3 categories. Medications that target the blood vessels that feed the cancer, medications that target the cancer directly by affecting it's metabolism, and medications that turn on your own immune system.
