A member asked:

What is a collateral (nonvaricose) superficial vein? is it just a straight vein that sticks out?

Veins like a tree.: Think of your veins like a tree with a central trunk and branches. The trunk in the superficial system of veins is called the saphenous vein and the branches that come off of this trunk are collateral (side) branches. Varicose veins are bulging grape-like veins and normal veins are usually blue and thin and straight. Veins can get larger and smaller for many reasons.
