Is my mirena (levonorgestrel) effective right up to the 5 yr mark?

Mirena (levonorgestrel): it is effective at least 5 years and possible longer. Talk to your doctor about how long he(she) feels it is effective. The FDA has approved it for five years in the US

Yes: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD is designed to give effective birth control for 5 years and then needs to be replaced. If you are late by a few days to a few weeks you should be covered but don't push it if pregnancy is unwanted. To be absolutely safe use condoms for protection after the expiration date. Good luck.
