A member asked:

I had thyroid cancer in the past. now years later i have abnormal blood calcium. could these be related?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Some relationship: Calcium metabolism is controlled vial the parathyroid glands. There are 4 such glands, 2 on top of the thyroid and 2 at the lower pole. When a total thyroidectomy is performed for Ca some of the glands may be injured and the Ca++ levels drop. If the remaining glands grow post op they produce excess hormone then the level of serum Ca++ becomes elevated.
