Yes: Traumatic brain injury leaves permanent damage or scarring in the brain. Recovery happens as the brain learns and creates new pathways to work around some of the problems. Stress, physical illness, exhaustion and re-injury can all make symptoms temporarily return or show more, but then can get better again. A great reference is dr. Norman doidge's book, "the brain that changes itself.".
