Is sids caused by toxic gases in blankets, clothes, mattresses?

SIDS cause unknown: Sids (sudden infant death syndrome or crib-death) is the name for when an infant dies in their sleep and no reason can be found. Babies in homes where someone smokes, and babies who sleep on their tummies before they are old enough to completely roll over both ways on their own, are at higher risk for dying from sids, but no exact cause has been proven.

No: Unless you consider carbon dioxide to be a toxic gas of sorts. Some babies that die of sids have an abnormality in the brainstem that makes them less able to recover with a deep breath when more oxygen is necessary. Back sleeping within populations brings the lowest risk of sids for babies. Also breastfeeding, cooler rooms, no hat, all reduce sids risk.
