Lactation consultant: You may want to meet with a local lactation consultant who can physically observe how your baby is latching on. When babies latch to the nipple tip only (instead of latching around the areola/dark ring), nipple soreness and ineffective feeding occurs. Another possible cause is a fungal infection, especially if your baby has thrush in the mouth.
