Excision and node: The operation will involve removing a margin of normal skin around the melanoma. How much skin that is needed to be removed depends on the thickness of the melanoma. In addition, a sentinel lymph node procedure may be performed. This involves injecting dye into the melanoma and locating the lymph node that turns blue. The location of this lymph node depends on the drainage of the melanoma.
