Is it safe to take 500mg of calcium with 400 units of vitamin d without adding magnesium? i keep reading otherwise.

Yes: Yes, of course you can do that depending upon the reason. If you are hyerparathyroid, or have hypercalcemia then follow your doctor's advice. If you are simply doing what you can to have healthy bones and muscle or are being treated for thinning bones, then you may take those together or separately. Also, magnesium, zinc, iron and ascorbic acid (vitamin c) are needed to help create bone too.

Calcium: The recommended daily allowance for calcium is around one gram per day (or 500 mg twice a day) and for vitamin D is 600 IU. So, it should be OK for you
