GERD: I think you are pointing out the difference between reflux which is when acid comes up your esophagus and esophagitis which is what happens when acid comes up your stomach enough to cause erosion of the lining of your esophagus. Esophagitis is a great deal more painful and long lasting than just a one time episode of reflux.
