Fever: The fever in itself is not a reason to go to ER. Give the appropriate dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen to decrease the fever. Also, a tepid bath or cool towels can help to bring fever down. If there are difficulty breathing or lethargy, then bring to the ER ASAP.

Is the temp with med: A one year old with temp of 38 without meds, and if the child is feeling and acting normal--eating and drinking--can be observed for the next day. If the temp is 38 with meds--then medical evaluation is advisable to check for ear infection, or some other type of infection. The virus that is racing through the country can start with fever and cough. If any ?, then take for evaluation.
