Complicated: Your son has developed some stretching of the bowel. This also stretches the nerves and decreases the ability of the bowel to contract so he has chronic slow transit, more water is reabsorbed and stools get harder. Once other conditions have been excluded (i.e. Hirschsprung,) he will need a bowel cleanout and bowel training to restore normal calibre and contractility. Chronic constipation: It usually starts during potty training and one painful BM can cause a child to hold his stool in the next time he feels he has to go. After doing this for a period of time, he looses the urge to go as the rectal vault expands. This condition is called Encopresis. He has a large amount of stool that needs to be passed and it will cause discomfort. I rec. 1/4 cup mineral oil 2 x's/d x 3 days.
