See your doc: Small amounts of blood-tinged mucus can mean a bacterial infection. See your doc and get evaluated. More than a tbsp of blood is more worrying and, of course, if there is a lot more than that you should head to the Emergency Room. If you have shortness of breath, constant chest pain, (not just when you cough), or fever over 101 F, you need to go to the ER in that case, too. Hope you feel better!

Maybe: It is never "normal" to cough up blood. But sometimes with a hard cough or with inflammation associated with a respiratory infection one can cough up blood. More worrisome problems can be associated with coughing up blood such as pneumonia and tumors. If it persist more than few days then see your doctor.
