Almost always: Hi. Sugar in the pee almost always means diabetes (virtually always). There is a new category of diabetes drug that PUTS sugar in the pee...but it's only used to treat diabetes. There is a VERY RARE genetic defect that puts sugar in the pee without diabetes. But essentially, if you've got sugar in your pee, you're diabetic. Ain't that a pisser?!

You're A Sweety!!: Diabetes Mellitus comes from the Greek to 'pass through' urine that is like it is 'sweetened with honey.' Now, I don't think you are surrounded by a swarm of bees, but if you have too much sugar (glucose) in your urine you may also be passing more urine than usual too. Except under some really unusual cases this may mean diabetes and should be evaluated by a doctor with a blood test or two.

Here are some ...: Normally, adult healthy kidneys excretes less than 0.5 g of glucose per /day so no or trace of glucose is detected most of times. Traditionally, obvious urine glucose in urine alerts us to ensure no diabetes, but some 0.15-6% of adults may have renal glucosuria, which is related with malfunction of glucose re absorption in proximal renal tubules from genetic factors and most of them are harmless.
