Viral or Bacterial: This could represent either a viral or bacterial pharyngitis, versus something more complex such a retropharyngeal abcess. Both viral and bacterial processes may present with similar symptoms. If you have high temps, white material on the tonsils and symptoms progress over 72 hours despite home and OTC remedies you may benefit from an in-person exam and rapid strep test.
