Popping elbow: This sound is a stiff tendon moving across a bone. Warm up your elbows first, even with heat from a pad. And make your first few pushups half pushups, so that strain is lessened until ypu are more warmed up. Full exercise with cold snapping tendons can irritate and possibly strain or sprain further.

Ulnar nerve: This could represent subluxation of the ulnar nerves. I have similar painless popping in my elbows when I do pushups. See a physician if you develop any associated symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling.
