Function determines: Joint noise is common and not anything to worry about unless it produces pain that limits your function. If you find that you are limiting your activity or assuming awkward positions to perform simple tasks, then you should get it evaluated. A simple x-ray would screen for any unusual conditions. Many times physical therapy and nsaids cure mild pain in any joint.

Varies: There are multiple potential causes including some degree of instability in the joint or potentially a chronic ligament injury. I would not hesitate to be seen if it is causing you trouble.
