Here today, gone...: With a tooth extraction the whole tooth is removed, Root and all. It is usually the cheapest, fastest way to treat a tooth infection. A root canal is a more time consuming procedure. the tooth is not removed. The tissue within the tooth and root is cleaned out and the space filled.The tooth then continues to function as it did before the root canal.
